Hey Popcorn People!

I really like popcorn. A lot. I know I’m not the only one. To keep it healthy, air popped is the way to go. There are a few ways to do this without having to use a clunky appliance. Back in the day, I used to toss popcorn kernels in a brown paper bag, twist it shut, and throw it in the microwave. It worked wonders until one day the bag caught fire in the microwave at work. Since then, I have found less flammable ways to air pop.

I have been buying Trader Joe’s air popped popcorn that is flavored with olive oil and sea salt for years now. It’s really tasty and very low in calories. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a ready-made snack.

Recently, a fellow popcorn lover turned me on to an even cheaper/easier/healthier way to get my popcorn fix… introducing the Nordic Ware Popcorn Popping Bowl. I bought it at Target for under $10!

I add a handful of kernels to the bowl, put the lid on and pop it in the microwave. After that, the flavoring is up to you. I always love olive oil spray and sea salt. Right now I’m munching on popcorn (olive oil and salt) and an apple. If you haven’t tried that pairing, you really should.

Other tasty combos include:

  • Coconut oil spray and sea salt
  • Olive oil spray and rosemary
  • Coconut oil spray, stevia and cinnamon
  • Olive oil and lemon pepper
  • Sprinkled with cocoa powder and stevia
  • Mrs. Dash, Spike or some other salt-free seasoning are perfect for the sodium conscious

    I just ate some for lunch today! Just did the ol’ brown paper bag (and apparently flammable!) trick. Thank goodness mines never caught fire *phew*! I normally do a tbsp of grape seed oil and then grind fresh kosher salt on it and that keeps me full for hours! One of my best diet tricks.

      I’ll have to try grape seed oil. Just bought some but have yet to try it! Tomorrow!!

    I love it with apples too! I still make it with the kernels in a brown bag sometimes. NOT Any more!
