Last night I got festive at one of my favorite parties of the year. It was an awesome time, and thank goodness for Uber. Well, this morning, in addition to a champagne headache, my feet are feeling the aftermath of a night spent partying in heels. Six hours in holiday heels leaves my feet begging for a massage! What has become of my wussy feet?
During the high school and college years, there was not one pair of flats in my closet. I mean it. It was platforms all day everyday, except during my shifts at Golden Spoon of course. I could walk miles in those sky high platforms without a second thought. I remember interviewing for a nannying job when I was in college – I wore platforms to the interview, got the job, and proceeded to wear platforms day after day as I chased those kids around. What was I thinking? It wasn’t just me, there were a whole lot of us. What were we all thinking?
Running shoes were an inconvenient truth that was limited to gym class and 24 Hour Fitness. Flip flops even came in a sky high version, yuck! But, long gone are those days.
My footwear looks much different now. I almost exclusively wear flats. I have two pairs of tennis shoes, some sandals and a few slip on. In the past year I added a hint of height with some low heeled booties. But the daily grind is mostly spent in a pair of Nikes. The runner up of the most frequently worn shoe of 2014 award are my Birkenstocks. They make my feet feel like they’re in a gentle hug all day long. (I do not wear them with socks, but honestly cannot imagine how totally cozy and comfortable that would be. Gosh, it’s tempting.)
Style is certainly a factor, but comfort is the trump card. My shoes need to be comfortable and uncomplicated. I don’t even want to know they’re there. You know? What does that make me? A mom? Yeah, totally. What does that say about me? Nothing! They’re just shoes, guys!
Honestly, I feel cuter when I am in higher shoes. But, I feel more myself when I am in flats. So, flats usually win. Except for the festive occasions where a girl has just got to throw on some heels.
Which shoe did you wear most in 2014? Did flats prevail in your closet too?
