Sometimes exercise needs to be just that – a physical activity to maintain fitness. Other times, exercise must to go beyond the physical and give the mind and spirit a workout too. That was what I was looking for today – I wanted a physical, mental and spiritual experience. I put together a 90 minute routine that worked my entire being and gave me a re-boot.
I’m not in the habit of doing 90 minutes of intense cardio and strength work on a regular basis. So, maintaining focus and endurance throughout the workout required that I engage my entire self – mind, body and spirit. And you know what? By the end of that 90 minutes, my whole self was worked! Sitting on my couch a few hours post-workout, I feel a weightlessness of mind. My muscles are tingling and I’m trying not to eat the entire contents of my fridge. There’s nothing like it!
The workout is a mixture of cardio and strength training work and you can adapt it for any sort of cardio machine. I think it would work very well on the elliptical or treadmill. I decided to set up in a dark, vacant spin room instead. For the strength training portion I used 10 pound dumbbells and did each exercise for the entire song and rested as I needed to. Quick transitions from cardio to toning are key. Set up your toning area with weights (if you’re using them) right next to your cardio machine so that you don’t lose anytime in transit between the two.
Whew! What a workout!
P.S. Thank you 24 Hour Fitness for letting me have my way with the Spin Room!
